Rehearsal Lessons; Ashgirl

Wednesday 9th March 2016

What was the focus of today's rehearsal?
We got given our roles and read through the play. After we did some blocking from scenes 1-4.

What important discoveries were made and what led to these discoveries?
Connor Sullivan and Connor Stacey (The Two Step Sisters) created their characters by finding their voices to fit the lady like personality. This was because it wasn't clear who they were when using their normal voices, so by having a different voice shows characterisation.

Which actor/s did you work closely with? How did they affect your rehearsal? And how do you feel you affect their rehearsal?
All deadly sins, Connor Sullivan (Sister), Isabella (Paul), David (Sadness&Lust), Estelle (Ashgirl). This was in the first scene where Connor had to remember the stage directions that linked to my actions on stage. I also worked with the others as we discussed what actions we were going to do and when. This affected our rehearsal as people had many ideas and we all got distracted. I feel that I affected their rehearsal because I did a couple of things wrong and I had a couple of people telling me whilst performing. This stopped the scene/rehearsal and we had to start again.

What are your next steps as an actor? What will your work be before the next rehearsal?
As an actor, my next steps are to do some research on different types of snakes. This will get me ready for the next rehearsal so my snake movements are ready for when I perform in front of the class.

Tuesday 15th March 2016

What was the focus of today's rehearsal?
We went back through what we rehearsal from last lesson (scenes 1-4) and then we continued with blocking from scene 5-6.

What important discoveries were made and what led to these discoveries?
I learnt more about my character by getting into character in rehearsals. What I learnt was that I'm not being envious, I'm representing it, and I decided that my character will be enjoying the conflict from the other characters. I also decided about my characterisation by doing snake head movements, pronouncing my 'S's' and sticking my tongue out after every comma. This will show more of a snakes features and create a realistic one.

Which actor/s did you work closely with? How did they affect your rehearsal? And how do you feel you affect their rehearsal?
Hannah, Ahmed, Asly and Maggie (All the Deadly Sins).

What are your next steps as an actor? What will your work be before the next rehearsal?
My next steps for an actor to have the knowledge of a snake. I will do this by research and print off information and bring them to rehearsals. Once I have done this, I will create a character profile to show my knowledge and research.

Wednesday 16th March 2016

The morning session;
What was the focus of today's rehearsal?
More blocking, including the forest scene; Scene 5. Also learning lines whilst others are rehearing.

What important discoveries were made and what led to these discoveries?
My snake movement; including sticking out my tongue out after every comma. Also a discovery of using my head when I say my lines and prounousing me 'S'a' clearly.

Which actor/s did you work closely with? How did they affect your rehearsal? And how do you feel you affect their rehearsal?
All the Deadly Sins. I kept messing up which made made the rest of the Sins mess up and that took time. I found that my character was too neautral and I had to think more carefully on how I will protray a snake.

What are your next steps as an actor? What will your work before the next rehearsal?
To watch videos of snake movements and practise at home the movements.

The afternoon session;
What was the focus of today's rehearsal?
Blocking Scene 8

What important discoveries were made and what led to these discoveries?
I discovered how to move like a snake whilst standing up as in the last scene last rehearsals I was just sitting down all the time. This is because I had to stand next to Isabella and talk to her as someone in her mind.

Which actor/s did you work closely with? How did they affect your rehearsal? And how do you feel you affect their rehearsal?
All the Deadly Sins, Tamera and Isabella. Some of them didn't know what was going on in the scene which made them confused and took time to go through the scene with them. But with me, I worked more with Isabella on the fight scene and I had specific movements towards her and I kept messing up as I didn't know my lines very well and I had a script in my hand.

What are your next steps as an actor? What will your work be before the next rehearsal?
To work outside College or Rehearsals on that specific scene as we had issues with it and we won't have time to go through it again.

Wednesday 23rd March 2016

What was the focus of today's rehearsal?
Our focus was a class about 'Developing Animal Characterisation

What important discoveries were made and what led to these discoveries?
I made the discoveries of how people reacted to my chose of character movement- too slow and more head movements. What led to this was that we presented our character to the class in groups and evaluated each others characters performance. We then gave our feedback to help us improve your characters.

Which actor/s did you work closely with? How did they affect your rehearsal? And how do you feel you affect their rehearsal?
All the class.
We spent approximately 20 minutes getting into our character and interacting with other people. This made us more focus and got us to think more about our movements before performing them. Some people distracted me from my warm up/rehearsal because people got out of character and spoke to others. This distracted me and I distracted others as I wasn't focused.

What are your next steps as an actor? What will your work be before the next rehearsal?
Do a page of my characterisation e.g. how snakes move, how I'm going to move, how they react with other animals, etc. Also, to of more research including videos and images of snakes.

Wednesday 13th April 2016

The morning session;
What was the focus of today's rehearsal?
Went over the scenes from the last rehearsal; 5-8.
More blocking; Scene 9 to 11- This is the end of Act One

What important discoveries were made and what led to these discoveries?
When going Scene 5, I realised I have to make big acting choices for my character; physically and vocally.

Which actor/s did you work closely with? How did they affect your rehearsal? And how do you feel you affect their rehearsal?
All Deadly Sins, Ugly Sisters, Mother and Ashgirl.
The discoveries that I made during this rehearsal was that I have to match the other Sins movement and make mine even bigger. I discovered this because I wasn't matching the others and my character was lacking emotion.

The afternoon session;
What was the focus of today's rehearsal?
More blocking; Act 2, Scene 1-3
Had the Make-up Lady- Sophie- come in and discuss our ideas for our character

What important discoveries were made and what led to these discoveries?
The discoveries that were made were that we have to communicate with each other and make animal noises.
Make-up; Light Green, Dark Green
Costume; Colour- Green
Hair; In 6 Plaits

Which actor/s did you work closely with? How did they affect your rehearsal? And how do you feel you affect their rehearsal?
All the Seven Sins- We were all working at the same level as each other and we all need to all exaggerate our characters. People kept messing up and made me mess up with my lines.
As a class, we all discussed our ideas to Sophie but also had other people say their ideas about your characters make up and costume.

What are your next steps as an actor? What will your work be before the next rehearsal?
To know my exits at the end of each scene.
To find examples of snake make-up and costumes for the costume and make-up people.

Wednesday 20th April 2016

The morning session;
What was the focus of today's rehearsal?
Blocking; Act Two, Scene 2-3.

What important discoveries were made and what led to these discoveries?
We improved Scene 3 where the animals made noises when going towards Ashgirl. This is because when we went through it, it seemed quiet and boring. So I had the idea of making it more interesting.

Which actor/s did you work closely with? How did they affect your rehearsal? And how do you feel you affect their rehearsal?
All Deadly Sins and Ashgirl.
I had to go bigger and better with my character to match or out go the others. I affected the rehearsal as I kept on doing things wrong. We also struggled with going from quite to louder in the scene and we had to re-do the scene over and over again.

The afternoon session;
What was the focus of today's rehearsal?
Blocking scenes 3-10

What important discoveries were made and what led to these discoveries?
I need to practise my lines with my snake sounds and movements. This is because I kept messing up my lines whilst I was doing the snake movements. I discovered this by physically doing all of them together.

Which actor/s did you work closely with? How did they affect your rehearsal? And how do you feel you affect their rehearsal?
All the Sins and Estelle.
We didn't know the scene well enough and it made all of us mess up on our lines and movements. With one single person messing up, it distracts others to mess up. With this happening, we had to start again and again as people wouldn't focus or listen to each other.

What are your next steps as an actor? What will your work be before the next rehearsal?
To practise my movement and speech in my spare time.
To type up these to help me show my improvements.

Outside of College Rehearsal

Monday 9th May 2016

All the Deadly Sins came in for rehearsals.

We rehearsed Scene 5 in Act One. It was a while since we had done that scene altogether. But it was different as most of us changed our characters movements and made bigger and better choices with our characters. Jack also was their helping and directing us. He really helped and pushed us to make our characters bigger and exaggerate them. He also pushed us with our lines as he would make us stop and start again if we messed up.
But our next steps from this rehearsal is to do more rehearsals where it is just us Sins in the room so we can really focus on the scene and our characters.

We also decided to make a Rehearsal Plan so we could work on specific scenes outside of lesson time.
My times to come in were on Mondays, but I also came in on Fridays to help people out with their costumes and to help with Set and Props.

This was made by Jack (Deputy Director) and it is his job to insure we have enough rehearsal each week. This is why he created this so we can follow his orders easily.
