Girls Like That Evaluation

'Girls Like That' By Evan Placey is a play which was originally published in 2013. 'Girls Like That' is a play that explores the influences and gender equality in this 'digital' generation. The play is a 2 hour play, so we had to cut it down to 40-45 minutes. We cut scenes and lines we thought weren't important to the play. But we kept the themes likesocial media and the equal rights for women. We wanted to keep this because it's what the play is about and without it, it wouldn’t have the same message and meaning.

In our performance, what went well was that it was fluent. We all knew where to go in transitions and what to bring on with us whilst doing so. This made it run smoothly and cause no problems. Also, we cut our piece to exactly 40 minutes from 2 hours with having the important scenes and lines in the play. And Lastly, our costumes went well with the play and really showed our characters e.g. my tie was low as my character wouldn’t care about the rules. Each character had something different to their costume to represent them which made our performance effective. But the performance would have been even better if we all knew the running order well as most of us had to look at what was next. Because of this, we were a little loud behind the white board and so this made distractions for those preparing to go on stage next. And also, to have used different staging with scenes e.g. the black stairs, rather than chairs. This would show levels and would have made our performance more effective.

With the Production side of it, what went well was that the final piece of the projection worked well. Most scenes had images linked to the scene being performed. For example; This is the Five Year Old scene (Scene 3), and we decided to show we are five years old by having a playground image projected behind us. This made it make sense for the audience and us performers.

But what would have been even better would be to of had more focus on both projection and music. This is because not everyone helped as we only had 2 people on each one. So having more people would have made it quicker and easier to do. But also, to have planned more on the set. This is because we didn’t have much of a set and we only used chairs, tables and the projection to show where we were.

The rehearsals were the biggest challenge. This is because of the atmosphere in the class as no one listened to each other. Because of this, not many people got to say their ideas for a scene. So it would have been better if people had better communication skills. But other than that, we did have some good days as we all turned up to rehearsals, people had good ideas had we had a good finishing performance.

We were required to input the research and development of the multimedia trend as well as the our play. This included; imagery, videos and interaction and use in the performance. In my research, I found that many theatre companies used projection/mulitmedia in creative ways to enhance their production;

We used mostly imagery in our performance, though we did shot a video for a scene with the boys in but it never got put in. Here are some examples of our multimedia scenes;

Image

This is scene 4 where the photo of Scarlett gets sent round. To tell the audience it was getting sent round, we decided to put social media apps on the projection to emphasis how much it gets sent around. This could have been improved by having texts coming up of people forwarding the picture on different social sites.

This is 'Girl With Flowers In Her Hair' Monologue. The projection of a rose field has the effect of imagery and makes them seem like they are actually there themselves. This could have been improved by having sounds of outside e.g. birds or the wind.

And lastly, this is the party scene. The use of a picture of people dancing shows they are having a party. This could have been improved by having music as it was just us talking.
But we missed some opportunities to show more of the projection, for example;

In this scene, we was getting ready for Tyler's party, we didn’t have any projection for this scene but we missed the opportunity to. We could have had the make up products we used behind us or have a video of woman putting make up on;

  1. Hey! Olivia, I just came across your really insightful blog. I am also producing a version of Girls Like That for a competition piece and am struggling with whittling it down to 40 minutes. I would be curious to know what parts you left in (and how much they overlap with the ones I have left in) and also wanted to know about how you managed your projection.
