Research
Performance/Character; EnvysnakeMy first step of my research is to research 'snakes'; their movement, different types of snakes, etc. This research will be in my 'Character Research' page. After this, i will chose what type of snake I would like to portray and research about that specific snake. I will then watch videos of other productions of 'Ashgirl', and compare it to our one. I will also see how 'Envysnake' is conveyed and compare it to my way of the character. This will help me with our production because it will help me with my characterisation and the way I deliver this character. But with the performance side, it will help us see any improvements within our piece. As well as this, I will then create a 'Character Profile' page which will include; makeup ideas, costume ideas, and my snakes behaviour towards the other Sins and Characters.
Production; Publicity
Firstly, we have to make a plan of where we start and what we are going to do each week. My thoughts of my first steps with my production role is to research. This includes; Images of ideas e.g. for the programmes, leaflets, tickets and posters. This will give me an idea of what they are like e.g. the layout. Which will give me the inspiration to create my own designs. As well as this, I will also research other posters, etc of 'Ashgirl'. This will give me other ideas of how I'm going to show the style of the performance just by the poster. For example; I might use dark colours like black and brown, to show that the performance is quite weary and dark. After my research I will make my designs of the posters. tickets, etc with the help of my research. Once I have my design ideas and examples of some, I will show my research in a PowerPoint and present the class my ideas. I will also ask for opinions and their ideas to help me improve the designs. And I will keep going back to my designs until the whole class is happy with what I have designed and achieved.
Influences
Performance
Our play Ashgirl is mostly Berkoff. This is because the play is un-naturalistic and Berkoff is strongly known for being un-naturalistic. His style is known as 'Total Theatre', Ashgirl uses some of his techniques in the play such as; the Physical side of acting (mostly with the Deadly Sins), exaggerated movement, replacing props with the actors (though this isn't quite the same, first scene where the Sins, Ashgirl, Paul and the Man In The Forest are the servants pretending to hold a tray of food with their hands)
Artaud
Our play has some aspects of Artaud in it, which includes; Stylised gestures (this is with the Seven Deadly Sins as they have to have specific movements for their character), Violent images/scenes (some scenes are a little creepy with the Sins and Ashgirl), Movement is a key element (this is mainly for the Sins, The Mother and The Sisters. For the Mother and Sisters, they are being played by guys, so they have to think carefully about their actions and movements on stage to show they are a girls. With the Sins, they have to think carefully on how they will show clearly what Sin and Animal they are to the audience).
Other performances of The Ashgirl
Personally I was influenced by other people portraying 'Envysnake'. This includes the way they moved e.g. with their hands. And also the way they spoke e.g. exaggerating the 'S'. This is from my research of videos of other productions of The Ashgirl e.g. Theatre Northwest School, which was performed in 2007.
Production
Other Posters of The Ashgirl
As part of my research I researched other posters of The Ashgirl. This influenced me to design the final design that was made. Most of the posters I researched and saw had the colours of; black, green, white, grey, pink, blue, silver, gold. I wanted to include the colours that were fantasy like e.g. green, gold, black, white. This showed the theme of the play in the posters/leaflets to the public.
